With the Army and its components deployed in over thirteen different countries, each unit faces different challenges and needs. One of the oldest traditional units in the Army are the Cavalry Scouts. Usually made of a five man team the Battlefield commander decides how hard and heavy to mobilize into enemy territory based on what a scout says.
The job of gaining and maintaining contact with the enemy without being spotted, mounted or dismounted, and reporting all this intelligence to the commander so he can mass his forces to defeat them requires this tremendous amount of knowledge. The main two things to be reported are terrain and enemy threat. To accomplish this the Army relies on new technology for communication and positioning services. Traditional pocket size GPS units are carried by all five scouts, as well as a radio and weapons.
Back at the FOB (foward operationg base) computers such as rugged laptops are connected to the soldiers GPS giving the MOB team a precise location.
The Army has come a long way since the old horse riding Cavalry who were soley used for spottiing Indian threats along the plains.
